Why I'm an Education major (no, I'm not abandoning track).

The next sprint is the next 30 years. Education is the long game.

Why I'm an Education major (no, I'm not abandoning track).

Every interviewer asks me the same question: 'You're a top long jumper. Why Education?' Here's the long answer.

Track is the dream. I want to compete at the highest level for as long as my body lets me. World Trials, NCAA championships, eventually pro. That's the goal.

But track is also a window. The body has a clock. The brain doesn't. I picked Education because I want to teach when the racing is done. I want to teach in places like the schools I grew up in. Blue Springs and the schools that fed it.

I also picked it because the coursework actually relates to what I do as an athlete. Pedagogy, child development, learning differences. All of that is the science of how humans get better. That's what every coach has been teaching me my whole life.

If you're 17 and trying to figure out what to study while you compete: pick something you'd be proud to do for forty years. Track will get you in the door. The major is what you walk through with.
